Fireworks! : Another new android application is out! | Have a Cup ...

Again, it took me almost a week to update this blog. For a week, I kept on working to create another new application, “Fireworks”. Now it is published in android market. Please download it from here and try it! I have had an idea of making firework application towards summer. Since now it is just in the middle of summer, I thought right time comes to make this application. So, where is the origin? Well, the idea comes from my third application “Happy Bees”. (Please refer to the article .) As you can see, in this game, a lot of Bees appeared in a screen at once. Moreover, when you touch a bee, it shows yellow explosion, consisted of many small particles. In this game, I got to know how to deal with particles. Particle seems common technology for gaming industry. When you want to make smoke, explosion, etc in the screen, particles are used. Therefore I thought, by making use of particle, I can make firework application. At first, I thought it is not so difficult, until I got to work..

It is such a conundrum!

As is often the case, At first glance, it looks easy, but later on turns out it is enormously difficult.. I always can not convince myself to complete the application in the beginning. On the contrary, I came across many opposite cases. For this case, it turned out it is deadly difficult to me. Let’s see how I stumbled upon this!

Circle or Sphere?

whether to make application of 2D or 3D, I always start with 2-D graphics. After making 2-D application, I modify it as 3-D application. Therefore, I set a viewing system as 2-D, as usual. As for fireworks explosion, I start with making it as a form of circle. The crucial element which makes firework so difficult is duration. Each particle has life time. Time interval determines the outlook of firework. At the same time, A Firework itself has life time. For that reason, you have to keep generating more particles until a firework life time ends. To generate particles, I take points in equal distance on the circumference and increase the radius along with fireworks life time. But this only makes lines radiating out from the center. Then I took points randomly inside a circle. But it does not make complete circle form. Finally, I gave up the idea of using circle and changed to use a Sphere. This time, it looked better. I picked random starting point on a circumference not to generate radiating lines.

It does not look like firework at all..

The thing I did not consider until I encountered is about colors. The key element of it is how to prepare particles. I use GIMP to make particles. Particles with monotone color make a dull color of firework. For a particle, I put white color at center and make transparent radially. I can not say it is sufficient, but this makes even better.
