How To Walk Into A Casino In Las Vegas, Nevada

I never felt more like a rube than the first time I walked into a casino in June of 1978. This was about a decade before  my professional blackjack playing days . The concept of probabilities had not yet captured my imagination. And the fact is, I was a rube — I just didn’t know it until I got to Las Vegas.

I’d been fired from a radio programming gig in Denver by  Doubleday Broadcasting President Gary Stevens — a former WMCA-AM/New York DJ who later brokered multi-million dollar deals like the Clear Channel/Nationwide Broadcasting merger.  I was proud that the President of the company and legendary  WMCA “good guy” had flown in for the occasion.

The ratings had declined by a fraction — apparently, playing  Stairway To Heaven every 75 minutes had attracted nice 18-24 male “cumulative audience” but had sent overall 12+ time-spent-listening into the tank. I’d figured all of those Bee Gees songs would balance it all out.

Who knew?

No tears, though, as  Mr. Gutfreund is said to have advised Mr. Meriweather in another context.

Since this had been coming obviously for months, I’d already lined up new employment. So I had a few weeks before that began to think about the nature of reality, the general direction of the universe and the onset of my 30th birthday, just a few years away, but already beginning to loom.

I had scheduled a road trip to  Mesa Verde National Park in south western Colorado to look at the abandoned adobe dwellings of the  Ancient Pueblo — a big summertime tourist draw down near Durango. There’s nothing like taking in the stark, empty ruins of a dead American civilization to get the juices flowing again.

Then, for some reason — perhaps it was the reading of  Hunter Thompson at too young of an age –I took off on the back roads for Page, Arizona, Kanab and St. George, Utah and, finally, Las Vegas, Nevada.

I remember rolling down I-15 wondering “gee, what’s the best exit” and finally getting off on Sahara, taking that short stretch to Las Vegas Boulevard, turning right, going to just past a huge billboard for a North Las Vegas topless bar, the Palomino Club ( still open, amazingly ) and pulling into the Stardust Hotel/Casino ( now demolished ).

It was the sheer, brilliant overweight of garish purple-ness, I believe, that attracted me and the magnetizing allure of a picture of near-naked Lido de Paris dancers.
