Hair trends: Women choosing new styles over chemicals

Women will go to great lengths for their hair. They blow dry, flat iron, perm and color.

For decades, women, especially black women, have used strong chemicals such as sodium hydroxide to relax and straighten their hair’s natural texture.

But as women are becoming more conscious of not just what they put in their bodies, but what they put on their bodies, that trend is beginning to change. While relaxers remain popular, women also are returning to their “roots” and wearing their hair in a variety of different styles that don’t require chemical treatments.

According to Expressions: Eco Salon For All Ethnicities owner Blase (no last name provided) in Little Falls, this shift is mostly occurring among college- and middle-aged women who have become more aware of the harmful chemicals that are used in relaxers.

Women tired of dealing with those harsh chemicals are choosing to let their hair return to its original state so that they can make their hair healthier and embrace its natural beauty.

“We understand that our natural hair is beautiful,” Blase said.

For Jan DeAmicis, a sociology professor at Utica College, the shift toward natural-hair pride dates back to the days of “black nationalism,” in the ’60s and ’70s, when African-Americans empowered by the civil rights movement began creating styles that they were comfortable with instead of trying to conform to society’s idea of what was beautiful at the time.

“I think there’s been an effort to create a continuation of ‘We don’t have to look like them,’” he said.

Replacing relaxers

Chemical relaxers made their debut shortly after 1910, when Garrett Augustine Morgan discovered a straightening agent while trying to develop a lubricating liquid for the machine needle, according to skinbiology.com.

But both the sodium hydroxide in “lye” relaxers and the guanidine carbonate in “no lye” relaxers can cause minor damage to the hair and scalp when used correctly, and severe chemical burns when used incorrectly.

Still, the products remain very popular. The Black Women’s Health Study, which followed the lives of 59,000 women nationwide through health questionnaires issued from 1995 through 2003, found that 94 percent of black women 45 and younger used hair relaxers and that 73 percent of them began using it before age 20.
