Kansas City Marathon

NKC lawyer has run marathons in all 50 states

It would be unfair to call Steve Fuller’s bucket list an actual list. There are just too many categories to it.

In the course of a conversation with the North Kansas City lawyer, he’ll rattle off the number of Mexican states he’s visited or tell you about his goal of getting to every country in the world.

“It’s actually two lists (of countries to visit),” Fuller said.

There are the countries in the United Nations he’d like to see and then there are all the sovereign states to visit, which is a much larger list.

And Fuller is all about lists.

Perhaps his most remarkable is the tally of the 145 marathons he’s run. Fuller claims he is the first person from Kansas City to run a marathon in all 50 states and he’s run the 26.2-mile race on every continent.

Yep, that includes Antarctica.

“It was a total white-out,” recalled Fuller, who is 62. “You had no idea where you were.”

Like most marathoners, Fuller enjoys the challenge of completing the 26.2-mile race.

Unlike most marathoners, Fuller has had a run-in with a yak during a race.

It came at the Mount Everest race in 1999. The start line is close to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, where the elevation is 17,000 feet and winds down to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 11,300 feet. While most marathons give pre-race instructions on etiquette and aid stations, the Mount Everest marathon had a very specific requirement.

“They always told the runners to let the people with yaks go first,” Fuller said. “A lot of these trails were very narrow in the mountains. Yaks are their version of locomotion and they have very wide horns. They always told us to be deferential to anyone with a yak. Whenever you would come to them on a trail, you would kind of motion to let them come on. But they were deferential to us.

“I was at one point in the race right along a mountain edge. I was telling him to come ahead and he wanted me to come ahead because I was a runner. When I went by the yak, it went to gore me. I just grabbed hold (of its horns). I tumbled down the side of the mountain. It didn’t bother me, but everyone was so concerned. That’s the type of people in Nepal, really sweet and generous.”

This is just one of his marathon tales.

Perhaps the most interesting story is that Fuller didn’t set out to run so many marathons. His first, which was in Detroit in 1977, was to challenge himself. And he failed, dropping out at the 22nd mile.

The next year, Fuller completed his first at the Kansas Relays and enjoyed it so much that he decided to run a few more. Before long he wanted to run a marathon in all 50 states.

“It didn’t occur to me until after I’d done six or seven marathons, each in a different state,” Fuller recalled. “That’s when I got the idea. I thought it would be a lifetime goal. I didn’t have any idea it was something I’d be able to do in eight years.”

Ever since he graduated from UMKC, Fuller has loved to travel, particularly to many off-the beaten path locales, which has led to another unusual list.

“I’ve had a gun pointed at me on five continents,” he said.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that he’s run a marathon on each continent, including the Mount Kilimanjaro marathon and the original Greek marathon.

And the guy who couldn’t complete has first marathon has even dabbled in ultramarathons.

“I did a 60-mile race a few years ago in Mongolia,” Fuller said. “We stayed in a yurt that would get really, really cold at night. Because it’s so far north, they started the race at 4 in the morning. You had to get up at 3:30. It was really, really cool. You basically crossed three mountain ranges. There were like four or five of us who were coming up the rear — some of these were championship world-class runners, and some were journeymen like us.

“I was just going to do the marathon until the day before the run, and I thought I’d just try to do the 60 miles. It wasn’t that hard in hindsight.”

Fuller has run a marathon a month for the last year and a half. So how does he do it? He credits yoga for keeping his body spry and often joins a local running group to remain in marathon shape. He loves the social aspect of group running, which keeps him motivated.

But as we all learn, age takes its toll, and Fuller has seen his race times suffer.

“I used to qualify for Boston (Marathon) and all that,” Fuller said. “Just lately, it’s been kind of depressing. My times just keep getting slower, so I don’t worry about it.”

Of course, running with yaks or up Mount Kilimanjaro or across a frozen continent will slow anyone’s time. With so many different race locales, does Fuller have a favorite marathon?

“It would be like asking ‘what’s your favorite song,’ ” Fuller said. “You can like a different one on a different day.

Fast training and a charity. | Kansas City Marathon Training

Last night I had a nice run… I’ve been going on this little 2.5 mile route in the local neighborhood and apparently I just ran the quickest paced training run ever. In almost exactly 3 years since I got the Garmin 405, I’ve been on 260 training runs and races. Of those, 190 I had designated training runs .. it appears that last night’s quick run was the fastest paced ever at a 7:22 pace. That should be exciting but instead I get a little worried thinking THAT’S 5. Aug 3rd – 18:25, 7:22 pace

That 2.5 miler has a couple of nice hills in it too… so this should be some great training for the Royals 5k coming up… in which I ran a 7:05 pace last year, 22:30… I’ll want to best that of course and from what I remember that course was fairly flat.

Well, speaking of the Royals 5k, this year I’ve decided to do something a little different. Like most races this one benefits a couple of charities. I usually don’t pay too much attention to the charities of a race other than feeling good about the cause that’s being supported and my small slice of registration fees going towards it. This year I’ve decided to see if I can go the extra mile and raise some extra money to benefit these charities. Read my plea here:

“Hey, this is a personal note from Bob. If you are here reading this, you know I love a couple of things that are going on here… running and Royals Baseball. I haven’t ever really gotten involved in a running charity or fundraising before besides feeling ok about the usual percentage of race funds that goes to the charity of choice… so I’m trying it out. The greatest thing about the charities here, Royals Charities and Variety Children’s Charity – is that everything stays right here in Kansas City so we are helping neighbors!! AND Kids! Help me meet my goal and feel great about doing it. When I run on August 28th I will be thinking about every single person that has helped out, and those we are helping out! Talk about a runner’s high! Thank you!!”

You can see all that on my fundraising page here:

And yes, it is fully tax deductible as well!
