Humble/Kingwood Roundup: Smith hits ground running at Atascocita
Atascocita landed volleyball coach Lori Smith last week — just in time for her to open tryouts with her new squad this week.
"There's nothing like getting hired and going straight to work," Humble ISD co-athletic director Krista Malmstrom said.
Smith last coached at Spring High School. She took a year off from coaching to teach at Oak Ridge last season. But Malmstrom still remembered her well from her days as a varsity volleyball coach.
"She's a very technically sound coach," Malmstrom said.
"I know whenever I was coaching, my team never played her, but my sub-varsity teams played her teams and they were always very well-prepared, very competitive, and I just liked the fieriness that she had as a coach.
"I was a varsity coach and I was impressed with her."
Smith certainly had no time to waste with the season kicking off with a week of practice Monday. The Lady Eagles open the 2011 season Tuesday, Aug. 9, at home against the Deer Park Lady Deer.
But Malmstrom was confident that her extremely late start wouldn't keep her from having success this year.
"She's very organized and has great attention to detail," Malmstrom said. "I think she's going to do a real good job for them."
The Lady Eagles will be led by senior setter Taylor Livoti and senior right side hitter Morgan McDaniel .
Livoti recently gave her verbal commitment to the New Mexico State volleyball team. She's been an all-district setter for three years. She also plays high-level club volleyball with the Texas Alliance.
Livoti, who was the Lady Eagles' team MVP last season, played in the AAU Junior Nationals this summer in Orlando, Fla.
McDaniel's younger sister, sophomore outside hitter Madison McDaniel , also is expected to be a key contributor this season.
The defensive-minded Smith also will rely heavily on defensive specialists Christina Courcy and Paige Gallardo . Courcy is the libero and Gallardo also will see time outside.
The Lady Eagles scrimmage Friday at Clear Lake and Saturday at Channelview before opening the season next week. After the opener against Deer Park, they'll play in the Duncanville ISD tournament.

Fort Worth ISD, for example, gained about $328 million in taxable property values, a 1.2 percent growth. But that will likely end up adding roughly $30000 to a nearly $600 million budget as a result. "It's so minor that it's like a drop in the bucket,"
Case Study: Arlington I.S.D. » Texas Propane Fleets
Arlington Independent School District (AISD) is the ninth-largest school district in Texas and has more than 62,500 students enrolled. Recently, Tracy Wells, North Texas Marketing Coordinator for the Railroad Commission of Texas , visited with the AISD Transportation department to discuss their fleet. Continue reading to learn how they have incorporated propane-powered school buses in their fleet and what the future of propane looks like at AISD!
Currently, their fleet is composed of 24 propane power school bus, 199 diesel power school buses and 200 gasoline vehicles. They plan to have 72 propane school buses in the next 3 years and a total of 120 in 5 years. AISD has been using propane for 9 months!
During Tracy’s visit, AISD bus drivers informed her on how much they love driving the new buses and the refueling process. She witnessed a training session with 7 drivers, which all stated the only difference with refueling propane buses is you have to wear gloves and safety glasses. AISD has one refueling facility on site, which holds 12,000 gallons of propane.
Arlington I.S.D. transports over 11,000 student passengers annually. The annual school-bus mileage is 3,300,000 million miles and the current annual usage of propane is 120,000 gallons. AISD pays $1.63 per gallon for propane and pay double per gallon for diesel. The new propane buses average 5 mpg, compared to the diesel buses at 6 mpg but the cost difference more than makes up for the savings by using propane. Vehicle maintenance is also reduced, due to the greater brake and tire life with propane, mainly due to the inherent braking of the throttled engine and less weight on the steering axle.
Arlington ISD Transportation Director, Jimmy Womack stated, “In addition to the savings in our fuel costs and maintenance, we are getting very positive feedback from the community on how excited they are that Arlington ISD is going green and looking after the environment and the school kids.”
We all want to reduce our carbon footprint and Arlington I.S.D. is doing just that by using propane as part of their fleet. Big thanks to my friend, Tracy Wells and Arlington I.S.D. for providing such great information for our readers!
