Annual country celebration honors agricultural traditions
The crowds may come for the fried dough and Demolition Derby, but the heart of the Cheshire Fair has, and always will be, the promotion and celebration of agriculture, said Melissa Kress, general manager of the Cheshire Fair Association.While making preparations for the county fair this year, Kress, who is new to the association, said she ordered 4,000 ribbons, ranging from first to sixth place to best in show, which are to be awarded at various competitions over the five-day fair at the Cheshire Fairgrounds on Route 12 in Swanzey.
The fair will continue through Sunday, Aug. 7.
An unusual highlight of the festival features a twist on the traditional pig race.
“It’s a pig race, but they dress up like hotdogs. ...We’ve had pig racing before, but I don’t think they’ve been dressed up as hot dogs before,” Kress said. “People really like to watch pig racing, especially kids.”
Another daily show at the fair this year features Slackwire Sam, who is known for his exciting tightrope walking shows.
“He does different things (once airborne). Sometimes he might juggle fire while he’s up there. He’s actually a really great performer,” Kress said. “He really gets the audience involved, gets kids to help him do things. He’s very funny.”
Shows at the grandstand this year include the T Bar T Rodeo on Thursday at 7 p.m., Tonny Petersen’s Hell Driver’s car show on Friday at 7 p.m., the Northeast Sled Services Truck Pull at noon on Saturday and the Demolition Derby on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
The derby, run by the Swanzey Fire Department, is an annual event that always draws a big crowd, Kress said. “It’s the action. People like to see cars get smashed up. And because it’s in a controlled environment, it’s not really scary to watch, but it’s exciting ...”
Anyone who has a vehicle they would like to ride in the demolition can sign up, she said.
The Cheshire Fair was started as a county agricultural fair in 1938. With the exception of the timeframe between 1942 and 1944, during World War II, the fair has gone on every year since.
Kress encourages attendees to enjoy the farming aspect of the festivities by visiting the agricultural end of the fairgrounds.
