Booker Creates Newark Office of Film and Television

The city of Newark, NJ is not in lights, camera and action. It was Steven Spielberg's 2005 series of "War of the Worlds," 2009 Eminem video "Not Afraid", and of course for "Brick City." But on Thursday, Mayor Cory A. Booker announced an official entity to help filmmakers and television producers: Newark Office of Film and Television (NOFT).

"Newark is a hub for television and film productions for decades, ranging from 30 seconds to great films as" Presumed Innocent "and" War of the Worlds "," Mayor Booker said in a press release."Creating this office will allow us to continue to take advantage of Newark as a place for world-class television and film production."

NOFT work with the Office of Communications of Newark and the New Jersey Motion picture and television. The office will offer a number of services to production companies, including research sites and support access for shooting and guidance through the application process state incentives. The office will also include training and internships for young people in Newark.

By attracting a labor force of media production products in Newark. the city hopes to spur its economic activity and job growth through the office’s creation. Newark currently boasts several editing and production facilities available for rent, as well as a number of stages and filming facilities, the newest being the over 100,000-square-foot Ironbound Studios, set to open in late 2011.

Producer O’Brien Kelley will serve as NOFT’s director. The office will be located in the Brick City Development Corporation’s offices.
