Game On! Attitude could hurt Randy Moss' legacy

Game On! columnists Tom Weir and Reid Cherner are in “freakish shape” but are not contemplating retirement.

TW: After all of the noise he made on and off the field, it’s hard to believe Randy Moss is marking his retirement with a one-sentence statement.

If indeed he’s gone, the debate now turns to whether the patriarch of diva wide receivers will strut into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. I think he deserves that distinction but his “I play when I want to play” attitude will prevent it.

RC: The first time I walked by a TV and saw a young Elizabeth Taylor in Giant, I stopped in my tracks knowing I just saw a game-changer. We don’t get many of those moments in sports — Willie Mays tracking a fly ball, Secretariat turning for home, Magic Johnson throwing a pass, Bobby Orr skating on the ice. I’m throwing in Moss flying over a defensive back.

Discussions over him cheating his legacy can be left to others. As a game-changer, he was straight cash, homey.

Woods’ return

RC: Judging by his news conference Tuesday, in which he gave short, clipped answers, Tiger Woods is done with the “I’ve been humbled by my transgressions and physical setbacks” and back to the old Tiger who barely tolerated anyone on his way to 14 majors. Good news for everybody but the guys in the field with him.

TW: It’s appropriate Tiger’s latest comeback is at the Bridgestone Invitational. Given all of the speed bumps in his personal life, the coaching changes and the firing of his longtime caddie, he’s been one long series of flat tires.

But now it’s time to show his disappearing acts are done and he can play like something other than a retread.

NBA

TW: Is there an echo in here? The NBA owners sound an awful lot like their NFL brethren as they whine about their economic situation. But the thing the two lockouts have most in common is that neither set of billionaires is willing to bare its financial books.

That leaves us to look at the numbers we know. And I say if a train-wreck franchise such as the Golden State Warriors sold for a league-record $450 million this year, then things can’t be all that bad.

Should the New England Patriots have an asterisk by their ill ...

They got caught breaking the rules/cheating/etc…It was the first half of the first game and they never got to even look at the “spoils” of their effort……

Do you imagine they have been cheating the whole season and nobody noticed…I mean, it isn’t like the Pats get much negative attention…I have yet to hear ANYONE accuse them of cheating since that game(except the conspiracy nuts, paying the refs, NFL wants them to win, etc)

That being said…How do you arrive at the conclusion that this season is in any way “ill-gotten” or “tainted”……

When are people going to get this?

The tapes were confiscated at half time of the Patriots first game of the season. Since then the Patriots have probably been one of the most scrutenized teams in NFL history as they chased perfection. There was absolutely no cheating involved this season only superior talent.

When the Patriots win the Super Bowl in a few weeks, all you whining pansies can kiss their assterisk.

because the bangwagoning fans and fair-weather fans like most of you idiots that like the gaytriots..makes the nfl money, and if it makes the nfl money why would they care? actually, they weren’t caught in preseason, it was the first game..

big deal they went undefeated..that doesnt guarentee anything in the playoffs..trust me, my college team, the 1-AA the uni panthers went undefeated and lost in the second round of the fcs playoffs..

they should build a new stadium in the shape of an asterisk, sports are dying because of money and fame..i miss the old days of football where a guy played just to play, the didnt care about money and how many superbowls and endorsement deals they could sign

its not cheating hahaha its legal to video tape the other teams coaches as long as you do it from the coaches box.belichick misunderstood the rule and had camera on his sideline right out in the open where everyone could see it he wasnt trying to hide the fact he was taping.it was a rule infraction and both he and the team was punished accordingly.do you consider being fined 1/8th of your salary insignificant?

the commisioner ruled it a rule infraction so what makes you think you know more than the comissioner?

Let’s think. Using anabolic steroids without a prescription is a federal offense. Video taping another team’s signal isn’t. You can’t compare the two. Also, they were “caught” before the first game of the year, so that must mean that we cheated in all 16, and that our cheating was so severe, that the talent of Indianapolis, Dallas, and San Diego, to name a few, couldn’t overcome our “cheating ways”.
