Fuming over wood burning stoves
Dollard des Ormeaux residents Helen Lipinski, and son Christopher Lipinski-Ship, are concerned with what they perceive as the city of Dollard ignoring their complaints regarding their neighbour's overuse of a wood burning stove.
"He's constantly using it," said Helen Lipinksi, referring to her neighbour's wood burning stove. "Come winter, my entire house smells like smoke. I smell smoke in my yard and my clothes smell like smoke when I go outside. Even the dog smells like smoke."
The Lipinksi family, who live on Pinecrest Street, claim that their neighbour uses his wood burning stove as a primary source of heating despite city by-laws specifically forbidding the practice.
"From late September to spring, he's got that thing running almost 24/7," said Helen. "It has gotten to the point where the smell of burning wood makes me sick to my stomach."
According to city by laws, "no building shall be provided with a main heating system using a solid fuel."
Helen and her son, after a failed bid to convince their neighbour to cease using his wood stove throughout the winter, turned to city council, hoping their municipal government could step in. Unfortunately, they were dissatisfied with their government's response to the issue.
"We went to a number of council meetings last winter and met personally with councillor Herbert Brownstein," said Mrs. Lipinski. "They told me that they held a special meeting regarding the issue. Mr. Brownstein even came to my house and saw the smoke himself."
Mrs. Lipinski claims that it was all for nothing. She argues that even after the meetings, nothing was done to prevent her neighbour from using his stove as the primary source of heat for his home.
The Lipinski family argues that the city sent urban planning to the neighbour's home on only one occasion. According to Helen Lipinski, Brownstein said that he "think[s] they handed him a pamphlet."
Christopher took it as a sign that the city simply doesn't care about their issue, or the greater public health issue at hand.
"I sent the city a detailed letter about the health issues that can be caused by wood burning stoves," he said. He went on to say that he had pictures of black smoke spewing from his neighbour's chimney, as well as a truckload of wood being being deposited on his neighbour's driveway.

Wood stoves are specifically designed stoves that use wood as the source of fuel for combustion and heating. Many types of wood stoves can be gotten in the market, which differ in their method of operation, kind of fuel used, brand, the heating capacity, and the sort of materials employed in their turn out. The standard wood stove can have lots of accessories that may be acquired separately and are usually not supplied by the maker with the product. The most typical accessory available is the kettle, which is employed for making coffee and tea or heating water on the wood stove. Some new designs look sort of like artistically designed TV sets.

This liner can help maintain correct draft and forestall topping, which can block your chimney. A popular alternative option to an out of doors wood stove in an inside one. Indoor wood stoves achieve similar things as an out of doors stove, but regularly with a problem.
Most modern wood stoves are airtight and permit the quantity of combustion air that feeds the flame to be controlled. Made of forged iron or brick-lined, welded plate steel, a wood-burning stove has an inlet for combustion air and a channel for combustion gases, or smoke. This control permits a wood burning fire to burn much more efficiently than a conventional open fireside. Wood stoves built in the 1970s and early 1980s offer efficiencies of fifty to sixty %.
