The weather has been extremely hot, but the flounder fishing has been on a hot streak also with some nice doormats showing up.
I received a letter from Clyde and Brandon Strickland of Paulsboro. They wrote “while vacationing in Cape May last week, Clyde and his son, Brandon, went out in their boat fishing in Townsends Inlet and caught some keepers up to 20 inches and many, many throwbacks. But they also caught a non-native fish from Florida, resembling an “Oyster Cracker” with black and white stripes on its trail.” They still do not know what species it is.
Anyone with any ideas either let me know or contact them.
Then, I received a letter from Anna Louis, of Westville, with a picture of her husband, George, with a 9-pound, 12-ounce flounder he caught fishing on the “Twilight” out of Wildwood Crest. He is 86 and she is 81. She had caught a 9-pound, 2-ounce flounder fishing on the same boat a few years ago. They have been fishing together for 63 years.
Then I started checking around because I was told they were catching some big flounder along the coast.
There is a fisherman in Absecon named Scott Newhall, who catches a few doormats every year and he just caught an 11-pound, 8-ouncer last week.
Lou Polson caught a nice one in Corsons Inlet going 8-pounds, 8-ounces.
Lou Castaldi, of Brigantine, caught the monster of the week going 12-pounds, 6-ounces.
Many five to eight-pounders were reported from the back bays down to Cape May. Ludlam Bay is still a popular spot.
Over in Delaware Bay, they are still catching flounder but not many big ones like at the shore.
Kate, at the Bay Point Marina, said it was one hot weekend, but those that went out caught fish.
She said Al Banks, Gary Swain and Joe Levins of Thorofare caught 10 keepers up to 24 inches.
Albie Ridgeway, Allen Eckert and Tom Scirrin of Sea Breeze had four to 23 inches.
John and Mike Antes, of Clifton Heights, had five to 21 inches.
Ed, Peg and Tim Holliday, Blackwood, fishing on the “C-Nile,” had five up to 22 inches.
And don’t forget the marina is having their annual flounder tournament on Aug. 6, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Twenty-five dollars per person.
Haase’s Marina, in Matt’s Landing, didn’t have much action except one angler, named Anthony, caught a weakfish. How about that?
Josh, at the Sundog Marina, in Newport, reported Mike and Frank DeMarco, of Turnersville, had three flounder to 22 inches.

Hi Tyler, yes I always reel the Doa very slow. sometimes with tide or waves no retrieving, just gliding. The jetty has not been very good fishing in about a month for the people I know, except for Bill the gotcha man. He has been the only one of my friends catching fish on the gotcha lure. I don't fish the jetty much. I hang out there with friends. I make a few cast now and then like today. When the water Temp. starting dropping the fish will turn on at the jetty and the beaches IMO. This Info. is only about me and my friends. I know some one is always catching a lot of fish somewhere, or even the jetty, but I don't know about it.I'm a friend of Bill's, too.
