The Day Of The Locust
Atlanta under heat advisory
The National Weather Service has placed metro Atlanta under a smog alert and a heat advisory. Georgia is one of 16 states with heat warnings of some kind today. Yesterday the official high in Atlanta was 96 while Athens and Augusta reached 100. WSB Meteorologist Kirk Mellish says "this will likely be the hottest week of the summer for Atlanta". The record for Atlanta today is 99 set back in 1957. Mellish says some places in north and central Georgia will top the century mark today and not fall below 80 all night.
The heat index in the shade is projected to be a dangerous 102 to 110 the next couple afternoons. "The chance of a thunderstorm today is low but the chance returns to at least normal tomorrow through Sunday" said Mellish. He said the heat wave will continue next week but be less extreme, and the second half of August looks more normal.
After going five years without a death on the practice field, two Georgia high school football players died on the same day. Locust Grove High School offensive lineman Forrest Jones died Tuesday night. He passed out after a voluntary practice last week. Forrest’s doctors believe he may have suffered from a heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Tuesday morning, a South Georgia high school defensive lineman died following practice at a camp in northern Florida.
The 5-day forecast from meteorologist Kirk Mellish:
Today: Mostly sunny hazy humid and extremely hot, high near 99 lows 73-80.
Thursday: Mix of sun and clouds very hot with a 30% chance of a shower or thunderstorm, high 97 lows 73-78.
Friday Through Sunday: Mix of clouds and sun hot and humid with a 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms, highs 93-96 lows 73-77.
