The five kinds of road warriors

Business travel is on the rise again, but not everyone who hits the road for work enjoys it.

A new survey by the Global Business Travel Assn., a trade group for corporate travel managers, breaks business travelers into five categories, including some road warriors who tend to feel weary or anxious about living out of a suitcase even for a few days.

Even so, the survey found that 78 percent of all business travelers believe face-to-face meetings are crucial and 79 percent bring along high-tech items such as laptops, smartphones and GPS devices to keep in touch with friends and family.

The survey of 801 business travelers who made at least four trips in the last year put them into these five categories:

The veteran: These business travelers tend to have more experience, with an average of 19 years in their professions, enjoy being on the road and take up to 12 business trips a year. These professionals nearly always bring along a laptop, and they represent about 33 percent of all business travelers.

Road weary: These travelers average 15 trips a year, with about half the trips made in a car. They tend to consider business travel a hassle and are often concerned about staying within budget. These travelers spend an average of $1,337 per trip, the lowest total for any category. This group represents 25 percent of all business travelers.

Wide-eyed and anxious: People in this group take fewer trips per year, 11 on average. They are anxious about keeping track of spending, abiding by company travel policies, and are nervous about navigating around unfamiliar cities. These travelers are typically male, with about half under age 35, and represent about 21 percent of business travelers.

Passionate, high-tech: This group represents younger travelers who are enthusiastic about traveling and look to technology to make them more productive while on the road. They take an average of 13 trips a year - mostly by plane - and say they pack several electronic gadgets. These travelers represent 14 percent of business travelers.

The new recruit: These frequent fliers tend to be novice business travelers who are eager to explore new destinations and use social media to meet up with friends and colleagues on the road. They take about 14 trips a year, with each trip lasting an average of six days, and represent about 7 percent of business travelers.

Said the travel association's Joe Bates: "The more we know about the business traveler of today ... the better we can develop strategies to help them make the most of each trip.
