Brewer's White repeats as Zone 1 player of year

Eric White, who led the Brewer Falcons to a third-place finish in the American Legion baseball state tournament last weekend, has been named the Zone 1 player of the year for the second straight season.

Also reaping top honors within the eight-team zone for the second straight year is Bangor lefthander Joe Stanevicz, last year’s pitcher of the year who shares that honor this summer with Brewer righthander Pat McEwen.

Dave Utterback, who guided Motor City of Bangor to a 13-8 regular-season record and third place in the zone tournament, was named coach of the year.

Dan Campbell was the recipient of the zone’s first umpire of the year award. According to Zone 1 commissioner Dave Paul, coaches in the league decided to create this award out of respect for the commitment made by the umpires each summer to American Legion baseball in the region.

White, who just completed a five-year Legion baseball career in which he batted in excess of .475, hit .542 this summer with three home runs, 20 RBIs, 12 doubles and 12 stolen bases — all while carefully being pitched around by other teams in the league.

The strong-armed Brewer third baseman, who was coming off his freshman season at the University of Maine where he played second base, earned All-Zone 1 first-team honors for the fourth straight season. He made the team as an outfielder in 2008, a utility player in 2009 and as player of the year in 2010 and 2011.

Stanevicz led Bangor to the Zone 1 regular-season title as well as a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. The recent Bangor High School graduate, bound for Husson University in the fall, compiled a 6-2 record for the Comrades this summer with a 2.03 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.

Stanevicz went on to pitch a five-hitter on the opening day of the state tournament in a 4-2 victory over Zone 5 champion Ramsdell-Rogers of York.

McEwen, a 2010 Brewer High School graduate who pitched at Husson last spring, went 4-0 this summer with one save, a 1.31 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 32 innings. He also pitched a complete game at the state tournament, scattering seven hits in an 8-3 win over Zone 5 runner-up Fayette-Staples of Saco.

McEwen and White were two of the four first-team choice from Brewer, while Bangor had six players named to the first team and Hampden, Motor City and Lincoln were two winners of the first team each.

Other first team were pitchers Curtis Worcester Bangor (5-2, 2.11 ERA), Jared Seamans Hampden (6-2, 2.28 ERA) and Evan Eldridge Brewer (3-1, 1.40 ERA).

BANGOR, Maine — It’s almost impossible for Art Morgan to drive around Bangor and not see something he had a hand — actually both hands — in developing, even though some of those things aren’t in plain view.

A civil engineer for Bangor since 1988, Morgan was officially elevated to Bangor city engineer on June 27.

“There are a lot of them,” the soft-spoken Morgan agreed. “One of the biggest rewards of this job is seeing a project completed that you had a hand in.”

Morgan replaces Jim Ring, who retired after 38 years of service as a Bangor civil employee.

“Art’s a great guy, and a great story,” said Bangor City Manager Cathy Conlow. “He was the best candidate to do the best job, and a fairly obvious choice to follow in Jim’s shoes.”

Ring’s shoeprints are expansive and impressive enough, but the 50-year-old Morgan isn’t trying to surpass or mimic Ring, only to carry on his legacy of improving the city’s sewer and water infrastructure, transportation, municipal facilities and waterfront.

“I’ve worked with Jim since he interviewed me in 1988. He was director of operations for Bangor Public Works Department,” said Morgan.

In 1992, Ring became director of public services and city engineer.

The Holden resident and Peoria, Ill., native says civil engineering is a lot like completing puzzles.

“There’s a lot of that. It’s a challenge to put all the pieces together and make it work for an economical price the city can afford,” said Morgan, who earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming. “And the weather is a huge challenge because of the short construction season and the damage it does to roads and other things.”

After earning his engineering license while working for the city, Morgan took on more responsibilities as project manager for many stormwater, sewer separation and waterfront development projects over the last 15 years.

“The whole waterfront project is a big thing in my career,” Morgan said.

Water remains at the forefront of Morgan’s projects.

“When I came to the city of Bangor, we still had 25 points of sanitation discharge into the Kenduskeag and Penobscot Rivers,” he explained. “Now we have five urban-impaired streams in Bangor.”

Those five include Birch Stream at Bangor international Airport , Arctic Brook near the Broadway Shopping Center and Bangor High School , Shaw Brook across from Route 2 and outer Hammond Street, Capehart Brook, and Sucker Brook near Stillwater Avenue.
