Former Vallejo principal lands job at Bethel High
For a quarter century, Lloyd Cartwright spent most of his career west of the freeway bisecting Vallejo. But two weeks ago, Cartwright was suddenly asked by Superintendent Ramona Bishop to head across Interstate 80 as Jesse Bethel High School's new principal.
"I just want the Vallejo High School family to know how much I'm going to miss them," said Cartwright, who spent two years as principal of the city's namesake school.
Cartwright's reassignment from the city's oldest to its newest high school was of part an administrative shuffle among the Vallejo City Unified School District's secondary schools approved in mid-July.
The reassignments were the result of former Hogan High Principal Greg Fetters, who would have been Bethel's principal this fall, asking instead for a vice principal position so he could spend more time with his family.
At Bethel, Cartwright will lead an administrative team of people who are mostly new to the school during the first year of consolidation. Bethel, like Vallejo High, will absorb Hogan High School's underclassmen and two of its career academies. Hogan closed in June.
"I really want to do good by (the Bethel) name, so I was really excited about the opportunity to make Jesse Bethel the distinguished school it's supposed to be," said Absylom Sims, the school's incoming vice principal, about Jesse Bethel, the first black Vallejo school board member after whom the high school was named.
Sims, a former vice principal at Mt. Diablo High School, was originally tapped to be part of the Peoples High School team, but was reassigned to Bethel. Sims said he appreciated Bishop's energy in approaching problems such as the district's expulsion rate, particularly among black males.
One challenge facing the new administrative team members is introducing themselves to the Bethel community, said Phyllis James, director of the new ninth-grade program at that campus. James served as a former reform coordinator at Hogan High School.
James hopes to not only personalize the education of freshmen, but all the expected 2,000 or so Jaguars expected at the start of the school year.
"I look at it as a way ... to graduate educated people ... who knows what it means to be member of the human race," said James. She added that it was important for students to know there were adults other than their parents or guardians who care about them and are concerned for their futures.
