Missouri wrestler Phillip Perry, 19, killed in single-car crash near Hannibal

Phillip Perry , a University of Missouri wrestler, died early Tuesday morning in a one-car accident just outside his hometown of Hannibal, Mo. He was 19 years old.

Perry had completed his first season as a Tiger. The 165-pounder had compiled a 12-5 record in tournaments as a redshirt freshman. He was the younger brother of Tyler Perry , former Mizzou heavyweight who graduated this spring.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Phillip Perry lost control of his 2000 Lincoln Navigator in a curve on Route 168 two miles west of Hannibal, veered off the road, and overturned as it went down a 20-foot embankment into a wooded ravine at about 2:30 a.m. Perry's SUV was not visible from the road. Troopers were called to the scene at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday, nearly a half-day after the accident. The Patrol believes Perry, who was alone in the SUV, died instantly of blunt-force trauma.  No autopsy was planned.

Missouri head wrestling coach Brian Smith told the Columbia (Mo.) Tribune that Perry’s death “just crushes you.”

“He came to me two weeks ago and said, ‘Coach, I’m doing really well in my summer school classes, getting A’s,’ ” Smith said of Perry, who had struggled academically in the spring. “He said, ‘I’m going to be back, I’m turning my life around.’ Then you hear this. It just crushes you. This is tough, real tough. A young kid in the prime of his life.”

Perry’s biography on the Missouri website said he was majoring in secondary education and hoped to become a teacher. He turned 19 on June 30.

At Hannibal High School , Perry was a three-time medalist at the Missouri state championships.

Part Two of my open letter to Hulk Hogan | WWE/TNA News, Capitol ...

Yesterday, I touched on a few areas where I thought a few changes should be made regarding Impact and TNA in general. In an open letter to Hulk Hogan, I talked about the Bound for Glory Series, the X-Division, and the next tier of wrestlers who should be in line for a push. Today, it’s the Knockout Division and, most importantly, the legends and marquee names employed by TNA Wrestling. Honestly, not a lot I would change in this area. The Knockout Division far exceeds anything the WWE has done with the Diva’s. Bottom line…TNA has good-looking women who can work. I do have one suggestion, though, and I think it’s a good one. I think the Division needs one dominant heel, someone who can step up and transcend the Division, take out all the other ladies and become a must-see week after week… sort of a one-woman NWO, so to speak. Not ODB or anything like that, but an attractive superstar with a mean streak. All the other performers can put their differences aside as they try to save their careers and take her out. Chyna would have been great in this role, but unfortunately that didn’t pan out. Anyone else in mind, Hulk? I think this could work big time and take advantage of one area where TNA is superior.

THE LEGENDS TNA boasts some of the greatest names, performers, and personalities in the history of the industry. Each individual’s strengths should be maximized, turning their presence into a tremendous asset for the company. Forget the inane internet chatter and complaints… turn it around on them and use it to your advantage. Just think, a father can sit down with his kids and tell stories about you and Sting at Starrcade, the rivalry with Ric Flair dating back to the ‘80’s, the wars with Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett. All the while, the children get the opportunity to see everyone their dad is talking about with their own eyes. To put it into a baseball perspective, it would be like me getting the opportunity to watch Mantle, Mays, and Snider play, legends I have come to know through my father’s age old stories and tales. The opportunity for TNA to create those types of moments and memories are there for the taking, Hulk. Several of the legends should become ‘managers’, reminiscent of the WWF back in the day. Bring the entertaining managers back! Flair could easily become the next Bobby Heenan in this role if he devoted himself full time. Jarrett could do the same, as could Steiner. Have each put together a stable, heels and faces, and let them feud. No factions like Immortal and Fortune, just TNA legends pushing younger talent to the next level. This way, they are no longer the sole focus of the show, but still very much involved, in front of the camera and on the mic where they excel. You are still utilizing their notoriety and fame, but in a way that is kind of a throwback to the glory days. At the same time, the next tier is getting their push with the legends right there with them. It’s a win-win, Hulk. This brings me to yourself, and Sting. When I first heard you were thinking of returning to the ring, I have to be honest Hulk, I thought you were crazy, considering all the surgeries. Then, you and Sting put together one of the most compelling segments I had seen in quite some time. The office confrontation where he implored the ‘real’ Hulk Hogan to return was an instant classic. I started thinking that, if done right, this could be a memorable event. First off, you have the right opponent. Sting is a legend, a professional, and still one of the biggest names in the business. Two, you both have history, with one of the great wrestling storylines of all time in your past. A match where Sting pushes you to your limits, forcing the ‘real’ Hulk Hogan to emerge, is the way you should be remembered. After that, the red and yellow will be back and you can continue as the face of the company, overseeing the company’s ongoing feuds and battling with Eric Bischoff. Eric’s character is one of the most despised figures in the business. It only makes sense at this time for you and him to be at odds. Interesting, huh? As far as Sting goes, after this title run, he can be used to put over the next great TNA champion. No doubt ‘The Icon’ can pull it off.
