Do not track us

In 1982, Disney released “Tron,” a movie about a futuristic world where users played inside a global computer network, called the Grid. In the film a computer program, Tron, was created specifically to fight for the users against predatory programs.

However, in the sequel, “Tron: Legacy,” the Grid has evolved into something much more familiar to the Internet of today. In “Legacy,” we see a digital dystopia where vulturous programs have taken over the network and seek to harm and exploit users for their own gain. This time, Tron – avowed protectorate of the users – has been reprogrammed to fight against the people he once swore to serve.

Today, the web is a lot like the world envisioned in “Tron: Legacy.” Internet and ad companies now engage in practices contrary to the security and privacy of their users. These companies, in order to help grow their business and increase revenue, have begun tracking and monitoring their users and storing personal information against their informed consent. According to The Wall Street Journal, this system of spying on American consumers has become the fastest growing business on the Internet, with an average of 66 tracking features on every website.

These practices are an infringement on the privacy rights of the millions of people who use the Internet everyday and it needs to stop. America needs it own Tron to protect Internet users’ rights in this ever growing digital world.

So-called “Do Not Track” legislation currently being debated in Congress is the strongest method of curtailing these abuses. Legislation will provide users with the mechanism to opt out of online monitoring and tracking. It will also prohibit the sale and usage of their information and activities to third parties and make any failure to comply with these new consumer rights punishable by law.

Companies are able to track users with the ubiquitous cookie – a piece of data that collects key information about a user when one visits a site. When a user returns to a site or visits another, this information is used by ad networks, which then target ads based on one’s Internet history.

Users who are already concerned about privacy delete cookies regularly. But even with these safety measures in place, trackers have found ways around deleted cookies. One rapidly growing method is with the aptly named Zombie cookies, a maneuver where cookies are resurrected after they have been deleted, most of the time without the user’s knowledge.
