Anthony's Ocala lawyer says her family always took 'unpopular cases'
That unrestrained display of emotion from Dorothy Clay Sims, an Ocala-based lawyer, reflects the motherly bearing frequently observed throughout Anthony’s six-week trial.
If lead attorney Jose Baez was the face of the triumphant defense, it was Sims who stood mainly in the background, as when she consoled or spoke softly to Anthony at trial, never more than inches from her side.
In the past week, however, with just two days left until Anthony’s release from jail to an undisclosed location, Sims, an expert in the field of direct and cross-examination of medical experts, has come forward to grant interviews to a handful of national cable shows.
Daniel Amat, an Ocala attorney and Sims’ former law partner, thinks this recent exposure will have a positive effect on her practice.
“She’s not a person who would run from the limelight,” he said.
Sims has offered her thoughts on everything from the jury’s work to her feelings toward her client in these interviews.
“I liked Casey Anthony. I came to trust her,” Sims told HLN’s Joy Behar on Wednesday evening, though blogs have pounced on her hesitation when asked whether she would entrust Anthony to baby-sit her grandchildren.
On Wednesday, Sims also told The National Law Journal she felt the jury, which acquitted Anthony of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, was “amazing” and spoke of her outrage over the backlash it has received in the wake of its controversial July 5 verdict.
“This jury, in my opinion, was amazing,” she said. “They were brave. They were bright. They were taking notes, because this was extremely technical. Presenting this information to them in a form that makes sense and is logical was what was done in this case.”
Sims, who has offices in Ocala and Gainesville specializing in Social Security disability claims and workers’ compensation, joined the defense team in September 2010.
This occurred after fellow defense attorney Cheney Mason approached her at a conference where she delivered a speech about medical evidence, she told the Journal.
In Ocala, where the Kentucky-raised Sims has been a longtime fixture, colleagues in the legal community praise her trailblazing work in the field of medical expert testimony.
“She’s probably one of the most qualified lawyers in the country to analyze expert opinion, whether medical or forensic, in a civil arena or criminal matter,” said Marianne Howanitz, president of the Marion County chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers.

she would ensure that credible evidence would come through or be discredited either by the state or the defense,” said Howanitz, whose personal injury firm is located in the same pastel Fort King Executive Centre as Sims' firm.
ADHD could increase a child's risk for wrongful death | Ocala ...
When a motorist drives negligently and causes a fatal car accident, they can be held liable for the wrongful death of any of the victims in the accident. Although a person can file a civil suit against the negligent driver for the emotional and physical damages they experience as the result of the wrongful death of their loved one, it does not mean that they put themselves or anyone else at risk for a fatal accident.
According to a recent study, parents who have children that suffer with the widely widespread disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or more commonly known as ADHD, should hold their hands a little bit tighter when crossing the street.
The study looked at the behavior of approximately 78 children who ranged from the age of seven up to the age of ten who suffered from the disorder. The results were compared to 39 children considered to have normal development and the conclusions were surprising.
The research found that the children who suffer from ADHD were properly prepared with the knowledge required to cross the road safely. The children knew all of the correct procedures from looking both left and right before stepping into the intersection to judging the appropriate distance between vehicles that would be considered safe.
The problem was that those children with ADHD simply failed to use the procedures they learned. "At some point in the decision-making process, things go awry, which results in a more dangerous crossing environment," wrote one of the authors about their results. The study found that those children with ADHD judged gaps between cars much shorter than others and gave themselves much less time to cross the street before another car arrived.
