Troupe to stage wedding dances of Mexico
Those who wanted to see traditional Mexican dance and hear mariachi music but didn't want to endure the heat of the Topeka Fiesta Mexicana can do so Monday night in the air-conditioned comfort of the Topeka Performing Arts Center.
That is where "Novias de Mexico" — "Brides of Mexico" — will be staged by two performance troupes from Pueblo, Colo. The show will begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the Georgia Neese Gray Performance Hall of TPAC, 214 S.E. 8th, where tickets can be purchased at the door for $16.
Tickets also can be bought in advance in person at the TPAC box office or through Ticketmaster, with the ticket service charging additional fees, by calling (800) 745-3000 or by going to www.ticketmaster.com .
Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotyl, a professional dance troupe under the direction of Celina A. Martinez, will present "Novias de Mexico," a program showcasing wedding traditions from five regions of Mexico: Jalisco, La Huasteca, Nayarit, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
The dancers will wear costumes authentic to each region, some of them imported from Mexico.
Accompanying the dancers will be Mariachi Aguila, a full mariachi comprised of middle school pupils of Cesar Chavez Academy and high school students at Dolores Huerta Preparatory High. This advanced performance group is directed by Jorge Melo, a former member of one of Mexico's premiere performing arts companies, Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez.
Martinez is a 2008 graduate of the dance school Instituto Regional de Danza Azueta in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, and holds a degree as an instructor of the arts.
The Martinez-led dance company draws its name from the Aztec god of music, dance and song, Huehuecoyotl, who is depicted as a dancing coyote with human hands and feet and accompanied by a human drummer.
The Topeka performance is part of a two-state, six-city tour of "Novias de Mexico," which begins Saturday in Pueblo and continues with stops Sunday at Century II in Wichita, Monday at TPAC, Tuesday at McCain Auditorium in Manhattan, Thursday in Greeley, Colo., and Aug. 5 in Denver.
