Celtic sojourn: World-class music fest set for Brunswick, Maine
Oad-trippers heading to Vacationland this weekend may find a little craic mixed in with their lobster, Moxie and blue-berry cobbler. The Saltwater Celtic -Music Festival in Brunswick will be lending a strong flavor of Ireland to midcoast Maine, with a daylong celebration of Irish culture and music this Sunday at Thomas Point Beach.
World-class musicians are heading to this southern Maine town a little more than two hours from Boston and just outside Portland. Grammy-winning fiddler Eileen Ivers — a nine-time winner of the All-Ireland Fiddle Championships — will headline Sunday night with Immigrant Soul at 6 p.m. Ivers has been heard on the soundtrack for the film “Gangs of New York” and was a featured performer in the original “Riverdance.”
The gates open at noon, and the afternoon of one-hour sets will kick off with the Maine Celtic Scene (a showcase of Maine’s Celtic community) followed by the Screaming Orphans; Karan Casey, John Doyle and Buille; The Prodigals; and the Dublin City Ramblers. Kevin McElroy and transplanted Mainer Seamus Connolly will host.
“I think Maine’s Celtic scene is kind of a well-kept secret flying under the radar a bit,” festival organizer Randy Labbe said. “There are definitely Celtic musicians and performers in our largest markets like Portland, Lewiston and Bangor, but for the most part it takes place in towns like Carthage, Maine, which is literally in the middle of western Maine mountains where nobody lives.”
The music is flourishing in communities out of the mainstream, but given that Maine is a fairly large state it’s a bit spread out, which is part of the reason Labbe threw his skills behind the Saltwater Celtic Festival.
This year’s concert will be the fourth annual but first all-Celtic festival.
“It’s where my heart has been in recent years,” -Labbe said.
The festival takes place — rain or shine — on Thomas Point Beach. Just off Route 24, the beach offers visitors a sandy respite overlooking Thomas Bay, a playground and 85 acres of picnic groves and green space.
Best of all, it offers camping for music lovers heading up to the festival. Bed down for the night along the coast and just a snow fence away from the festival proper: $24 will get you a campsite for two adults and two children; electrical hookups are $5 extra (to book, call 207-725-6009).
