For summer reading, some like it hot

One summer, several years ago (during a time period that I have come to fondly think of as BC-Before Children) I found myself relaxing in the sun on a lakeside dock.

An anonymous female relative noticed the cover of the book that I was reading. "Oh," she simpered, "you are reading a romance. Don't you find that those are all the same?"

Although her superior tone nettled me, I managed to overcome my immediate and rather strong impulse to either fling the book at her and/or enter into an immediate and fierce argument as to the merits of the romance genre.

Since that day I have reflected upon that lakeside moment many times. No, romances are not all the same. Some are better than others. Yes, they may have a similar structure (there is usually some kind of misunderstanding between the hero and heroine AND romances by definition have to have a happy ending) but saying that all romances are the same is like saying that all chocolate is the same.

The numbers that surround the romance industry are astounding. In 2009 (according to the Romance Writers of America site) romance sales generated $1.36 billion! That is billion (with a "b"). Contemporary romantic series (at 22.83 percent of all romances sold) continue to be the most popular subgenre with contemporary individual novels right behind and "paranormal" in the third place spot.

The romance market is a veritable publishing juggernaut. In 2008, 74.8 million people read at least one romance. With roughly 9,000 new romances hitting the market each year there is truly something for everyone.

Want a paranormal romance that features a vampire, an angel, or even a mermaid as the main character? Want a romance that takes place during the Georgian period or Victorian period in London? There are many of those but Mary Balogh (rhymes with Kellogg) writes Georgian romances that are the cat's meow.

Want a romance that features a tender male-on-male romantic relationship? Yep, those have really gained in popularity within the last few years and they are being (mainly) written, purchased and devoured by straight women (Library Journal, Dec. 2010). Perhaps your tastes run more to romantic suspense? There are some great romantic suspense novels out there, too. Elizabeth Lowell, Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter and Deanna Raybourn have all written wonderful series that come on strong with the romance and the suspense.
