Two Nebraska banks get $24.3M

Two Nebraska banks have received $24.3 million from the U.S. Treasury to boost their lending capacity through a program designed to create jobs and earn a payback to the federal government.

Adams Bank in Ogallala received $21.9 million and Banner County Bank in Harrisburg received $2.4 million through the Small Business Lending Fund, part of the Small Business Loan Act.

Iowa banks have not received funds in the program yet, but more banks will join the program in coming weeks, a Treasury spokesman said.

The program, open only to financially strong banks, requires them to pay the federal government a dividend that starts at 5 percent a year and can decrease to as low as 1 percent as a bank's lending increases. The money goes back to the government in 4� years.

Todd Adams, CEO of Adams Bank, said the bank has a goal of increasing its lending by $50 million in two years.

"This is a way to put capital back into strong banks so that they will expand their lending," he said. "We want to make sure we are able to meet the credit needs of the borrowers in our area.

"We want to make loans available to businesses so they can expand and keep the economy moving."

Much of the increase will go to agriculture-related businesses, he said, although farmers in the area have been reducing their borrowing thanks to recent profitable years.

Roger Wynne, CEO of Banner County Bank, said he hopes to expand the bank's commercial lending by at least 10 percent.

Earlier this year the bank acquired the assets of First State Bank of Beaver City, so the added capital will help the bank grow in that new market.

In a statement, Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin said capital is critical to small business expansion. "These funds will help unlock credit for Main Street entrepreneurs to support private sector growth and job creation."
