Miami Art Museum Hires Latin American Art Expert Tobias Ostrander as Chief Curator

Ostrander will oversee the museum's public, education, and exhibition programs, all of which will be greatly expanded when the museum moves into its new waterfront facility — over twice the size of its current home — in 2013. The position was created specifically to address the expanded demands of the new space. Ostrander will start in September.

Ostrander's background in Latin American art made him a "perfect match" for "the uniquely diverse community the museum represents," MAM trustee Dennis Scholl , chair of the curatorial search committee, said in a statement.

Indeed, Ostrander's résumé is heavy on Latin-American art.For the past two years, he served as director of El Museo del ECO experimental space for contemporary art alternative managed by the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. (Experimental Museo is one of six international arts organizations that are involved in the Museum of New the "Museum Hub" of partnership.)

Recently, he co-organized the exhibition "The incongruous image - Marcel Broodthaers and Liliana Porter," which closed last month at the New Museum. Ostrander also served as the longtime curator of contemporary art at Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City.

A showy Herzog & de Meuron -designed building isn't the only new development underway at the Miami Art Museum . A big new building, apparently, requires new staff to occupy it: MAM will hire Tobias Ostrander as its new chief curator and deputy director for curatorial affairs, the museum announced today.

Ostrander will oversee the museum's public, education, and exhibition programs, all of which will be greatly expanded when the museum moves into its new waterfront facility — over twice the size of its current home — in 2013.The position was created specifically to meet the expanded requirements of the new space.
