Rural Poll says different things to animal welfare interests

Rural Poll highlights

* 95 percent of rural Nebraskans surveyed agree animal welfare means providing adequate food, water and shelter to livestock animals.

* 69 percent agree it includes adequate exercise, space and social activities for the animals.

* 56 percent agree regulation of livestock practices is adequate.

* 84 percent believe livestock farmers and their veterinarians know how best to care for their animals.

* 74 percent believe animal welfare is better protected on family farms than on large corporate farms.

* More women than men -- 73 to 64 percent -- endorse the expanded definition of animal welfare.

* More men than women -- 67 to 48 percent -- regard regulations as adequate.

Some see an animal welfare initiative aimed at Nebraska livestock producers as a matter of time.

No matter what's ahead at the ballot box, the attitudes of rural Nebraskans on that subject now are a matter of record.

Spokesmen for the Humane Society of the United States and for the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation both found numbers to like Monday in the 16th annual Nebraska Rural Poll.

Craig Head of the Farm Bureau focused on 84 percent. Jocelyn Nickerson of the Humane Society of the United States was more intrigued by 69 percent.

"I think the one that jumps out at me right away," said Head, "is that 84 percent think farmers and their veterinarians know best how to care for their animals."

Nickerson cited the 69 percent who think animal welfare means not only food, water and shelter, but also exercise, space and social activities.

"This is just further evidence that my efforts and those of the Humane Society of the United States are in line with the general public," she said.

Both numbers come from the 2,490 responses to a survey mailed earlier this year by the Center for Applied Innovation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The relevance of the findings reflects both the state's prominence in livestock agriculture, including being the nation's second leading cattle feeder, and the activist role in animal welfare affairs that the Humane Society has played in California, Colorado, Ohio and other states.

As a non-metro undertaking, the Rural Poll confines itself to 84 non-metro counties, excluding Lancaster, Douglas, Saunders, Seward and five other counties associated with the Lincoln and Omaha metropolitan areas.

Head also pointed to the 96 percent outcome on another question of public attitude.
