Me And Mrs Jones Lyrics

A contest has singers celebrating recovery | Philadelphia Inquirer | 2011-07-27

As the keyboardist warms up under the stage lights, a handful of singers, once broken, sit in the back of the auditorium, anticipating their moment to shine.

"I hope I'm not first," says Debra Stafford, 36, petite with an expressive face, her mahogany skin warmed against her pink-ruffled shirt, a pink butterfly ring on her manicured hand. "I want to hear everybody else first," she says, bouncing in her seat like a buoy on the water. "I want to get into the groove of it."

Slowly, on this humid day, the audience fills in, faithful at drug and alcohol recovery centers across the city. So are Stafford and her six competitors, in the auditorium in Bonnell Hall at Community College of Philadelphia to sing before five judges in the city's first "Recovery Idol" contest.

It's a chance to showcase talent once lost, and for some, a reason, for the first time in a long time, to feel good about themselves.

"You want a Halls?" asks Stafford as she turns and offers a cough drop to one of the singers, a lean man dressed in cream from head to toe, nodding to the music coming over his headphones.

Next to him, a woman with shiny makeup and big, honey-colored hair writes lyrics on the inside of her hand. In the next row, a young man in ripped jeans listens to his iPod with his eyes closed, his radio and composition book by his feet. Down from him, a man studies the lyrics from Luther Vandross' "A House Is Not a Home" on crumpled paper. On the end, a woman in a flowing dress sits alone, as does a young woman in white.

There were originally 10 singers in the five-round competition, organized by the city's Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services. The seven who showed up will move by default to the second round, Aug. 4 at Third Hall Recovery Club in North Philadelphia. There, two will be cut. At the end of this round, the contestants will learn that they won simply by showing up.

The final round will be held Sept. 24 at Penn's Landing during the annual Recovery Walks event, which has drawn thousands. The remaining two singers will compete for a plaque, studio time, and the title of Recovery Idol. Billy Paul, who sang the 1970s hit "Me and Mrs. Jones," is to be a judge.

TAUFIK BATISAH - ME AND MRS JONES LYRICS

Me and Mrs. Jones -
we've got a thing going on - yes we do
We both know that it's wrong,
but it's much too strong
to let it go now.

We meet everyday, at the same café
6:30 I know - I know she'll be there.
Holding hands - making all kinds of plans
as the jukebox play - our favorite song.
