Fishscale doll inspires book, publishing venture

Two years ago, Ann Hailey of Davenport was traveling in Peru when she happened to buy a small doll made of fishscale from Rosita, a young girl tending a stand.

Little did Hailey know that the purchase would change her life.

When she got home, Hailey decided she would like to write a picture book about the doll’s adventures and send it back to the girl, one of the Yagua people, a community of about 3,000 living in the Amazon rainforest.

“I wanted her to know that the doll went out into the world and (was) having a great time,” Hailey said.

So she took pictures and wrote text in both Spanish and English, with the translation by Allen Bertsche of Augustana College in Rock Island. But then, she got stumped on the publishing part.

And that’s where the life-changing part came in.

Not only did Hailey compose “Fishscale Girl,” but she also formed her own publishing company called Cochiy Press. (“Cochiy” is the Yagua word for “parrot.”) In addition, she set up a website and an office in Bettendorf, and she worked with a printing broker in California to have several thousand hardcover books printed in China.

"It was a huge effort," she said of the development of society, something she knew nothing. The Midwest Writing Center in Davenport has been a great help with its advanced the right direction, she said.

A book launch will be Friday at Vander Veer Botanical Park Davenport.

Revenue from sales will go to support education in Peru, specifically the Adopt-a-school in a non-profit group called Conservacion de la Naturaleza Amazonica del Peru.

"When people buy a book online, the purchase supports a public school for two days," said Hailey. Its goal is to raise $ 5000.

The text of the book is simple, telling how a doll made of lungfish scale, seeds and shells, and held together with natural fibers, makes its way from the Amazon River to the Mississippi River. The doll notes how many things are the same — the smell and feel of the soil, for example — but other things are different, and she learns to read and drive a truck.

Hailey envisions a series of “Fishscale” books and the second, titled “Fishscale and the Disaster,” is already at the printers.

Accompanying lesson plans for teachers also are available.

Writing / Editing Hailey is the fourth major career change. It began as a teacher with a degree in English literature.
