New In-N-Out in Fort Worth not good for urbanism

This one’s long, nerdy, critical, and not super cheerful. Ye be warned.

At this point, it’s obvious that Fort Worth’s first In-N-Out Burger location , at 7th & Currie directly across from the West 7th development is getting very near to opening, so I thought now would be a good time to take a look at it from a Fort Worthology perspective. This isn’t about food – it’s about the new In-N-Out building and how it relates to the street, or doesn’t.

And, unfortunately, In-N-Out’s building looks like a huge missed opportunity. It continues the schizophrenic nature of development on 7th Street – for every generally well-designed development like West 7th, So7 , and Museum Place that attempts to balance the street’s car-dominated past with its envisioned pedestrian-oriented future and usually does a decent-to-good job of it, there are developments like Montgomery Plaza and, well, this, that might make a concession or two to their urban village location but otherwise miss the boat.

I wouldn’t call the In-N-Out as bad as Montgomery Plaza from an urbanism perspective – where MP is actively hostile to pedestrians (you can’t even walk from its too-small sidewalk to the development without forcing through inappropriate hedgerows or putting yourself in the path of traffic in the driveways), the In-N-Out at first glance makes some effort to be welcoming. To their credit, they’ve got two entrances – a parking lot-centric one and a street-centric one. There’s a large outdoor dining area on 7th Street. Parking’s off to the side/back (good), and while there is a drive-through (bad), it’s at least back out of the way (decent). However, there’s lots going wrong here as well, a few big things and a lot of little ones. I don’t want to make this a dogpile, but it’s important to identify things that aren’t helpful to creating truly urban feel that people say they want on 7th.

First, putting aside issues of style (and the main thing I keep thinking, which I’ve heard echoed from many others, is that this looks like a particularly swank Walgreens), there are more and larger windows facing the parking lot than there are facing 7th (and there aren’t any windows of any noteworthiness on Currie – more on that later). Transparency of a street facade is important to creating an appealing walking environment. I know these suburban chains have a generic, easily-repeatable blueprint they always follow, but whatever the reason for those tiny bunker-like windows on 7th, it would have been beneficial to alter the plans to allow something more friendly and engaging.
