Down in Aussie land I have been using another alternative i.e. "Sculpy Polymer Clay" . It comes in a variety of colours but I personally find black accentuates most specimens and can also hide a few sins. Before your lateral lego mould idea, I found the simple rolled marble or sausage shape, poked with the appropriate specimen prior to baking, worked quite well for many thumbnail and larger pieces. Those are some great ideas, Jolyon, and the bases made with the aid of Legos are really neat. For your future ideas with liquid epoxy, how about impressing the bottom of the mineral specimen in oil based, modeling clay; then pouring melted paraffin into the depression; and using the paraffin model as part of the mold for the epoxy. It could be melted out in a "lost wax" manner after the epoxy is set. My sister (who is a world expert on the stuff, with two books published) tells me there was a very well known problem in the US with the stuff if you bought very old stock that had been sitting on shelves for ages or had been left in a hot postage sorting office for a few days during transportation, it would degrade the quality of the clay significantly. Which is why those clay experts in the US tend to order their clay stocks in the spring and not in the summer. I just wanted to let people know that I went to Michael's (an arts and craft store in the USA) and they were having a sale on a bunch of different brands of 2 oz polymer clays including Fimo, Sculpy, and what appears to be the store brand under the craft smart name. All of these brands are going for 50 percent off at the moment. So it is a good time to stock up on these if you live near one of their stores. I bought 4 packages each of craft smart black and white clays at a cost of at least 1/2 that of the other brands.
